about

The first single off of "Handful of Laughs" (April 14, 2012), Gauge is the tale of David's relationship with his next door neighbor's rottweiler named Gauge. She would roar at David as he arrived and departed on his bicycle, terrorize his soul as she wailed in the throngs of heat, and mock him with mesmerizing eyes each time he flinched in fear. She was a pretty girl, who died of cancer shortly after David wrote the song.

lyrics

Can you hear me? Can you see me?
A meager fence divides our yards
I am the keeper of the Pony stable
Cross my path and I’ll eat your heart
Yea, I’ll eat your heart

I’m all bark and all bite
I can taste your fright
Every day and night

Once a month, maybe more
Rorschach lies on the floor
And I cry when I want something more
Yea, I need some thing more

I know you know I could bite your hand off
I can see it in your eyes
Who’ll make the first move in this awkward stand-off
I can wait, I’ve got the time. I don’t mind
I can wait, I’ve got time.

I’m all bark and all bite
I can taste your fright
Every day and night

Once a month, maybe more
Rorschach lies on the floor
And I cry when I want something more
Yea, I need some thing more

And you grin with satisfaction
As you gaze at our reactions
You could put us all in traction
Have you thought about your actions

Why hate bicycles? They’re so benign.
Cold like icicles runs down my spine.

And Gauge, you're a pretty, pretty, girl.
